British Digital Economy Bill – Legalised invasion of online privacy?
There are some worrying developments taking place in the UK regarding the British Digital Economy Bill which seeks to make law new restrictions around the internet and the way we use it. As with most laws of this nature it is being sold as an effort to protect licensed content. In reality this law will give government extraordinary powers that could range from banning users from using the internet for copyright infringement to shutting down entire sites. This bill is being rushed through without a sufficient level of consultation with the people who may be in a strong contribution to contribute.
This bill has potentially far reaching effects on you as an internet marketer as the mechanisms for properly monitoring internet usage and establishing true ownership of copyrighted material are not fully evolved. It is not the case that legislation is not required but rather in the structure of this whose interests are being represented. There are major issues around the rights that will be proffered to copyright holders to access what you are doing online to protect their material. This is a significant intrusion that is basically legalised invasion of privacy
