Government service sites - who stole the info!!

Bluetick

We have the opportunity to pitch for the development of a a Government Service website. To prepare for this we have been looking at a few sites and it is remarkable how varied these re from country to country. In many cases there seems to be a complete lack of understanding of the reasons why people will visit this type of site. The bottom line is people are not visiting these sites for flowery words or fancy graphics, they want information.
The websites we reviewed were often difficult to navigate and as a result you stand about as much chance of finding what you need as you have ending up in a completely different area. After several minutes of browsing around it is clear you will probably end up having to pick up the phone to get someone to make some sense of the situation..

In the most simple terms people visiting your site will want to find the information they need, understand it and hopefully be presented with the opportunity to take action immediately. Developers and Consultants will often give impressive sounding descriptions of what they will deliver for you in developing your site for you. You however should make sure these three fundamental questions are answered

  1. Can my visitors find what they are looking for quickly and easily
  2. Do my visitors understand the information being presented to them
  3. Can my visitors take the necessary action immediately

If the answer to any of these questions is no start over and make sure the specific issue is addressed

We would be very interested in hearing from you and your experiences in trying to get the information you need, bot good an bad. Please include a link if you can.
